Full-Face Respirators

Full-Face Respirators

Full-face respirators are reusable air-purifying devices that protect both the respiratory tract and eyes from exposure to harmful, irritating substances including dusts, fogs, fumes, mists, smokes, sprays, vapors, gases, and other airborne particulates. They feature a flexible seal that ensures a sealed fit around the full perimeter of the face. Full-face respirators have an Assigned Protection Factor (APF) of 50, and may be constructed of silicone, thermoplastic, or rubber materials to allow repeated cleaning, disinfection, storage, and reuse.

Full-face respirators are designed to be used with National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)-rated particulate filters, and/or cartridges. Filters and cartridges are designed to be worn with a specific respirator and are not interchangeable with every model or type of respirator facepiece.* Filters and cartridges may be securely attached using a bayonet (pin-and-socket) or threaded (screw-type) fitting.

Full-face respirators are available in x-small, small, medium, and large sizes. They may be worn with hard hats, hoods, or face shields. Strap harnesses or ratchet suspensions ensure a secure fit to the wearer’s head and are typically constructed of a durable, flexible material such as polyester, elastic, nylon, or rubber. Straps and harnesses should be tightened or loosened with the respirator in place.

Gas masks are air-purifying respirators equipped with a full-face respirator or mask, and include cartridges or canisters to filter specific harmful or irritating chemical gases from the air. Typically worn by first responders, law enforcement, and counter terrorism personnel, they are only effective when used with filters and/or cartridges specifically suited for protection from gaseous biological or chemical substances.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires fit testing prior to first-time use, and on a consistent annual basis thereafter. Wearers should always inspect the respirator before each use to determine whether or not the respirator is complete and undamaged and to verify that the sealing material properly adheres to the face.

*Regulatory compliance details and filter/cartridge compatibility can be obtained at the individual product level.
